This piece was my first adult painting, made in around 2009/10, dealing directly with the history of domestic abuse in my family.
The title is a double entendre, referring both to the painting process-in which the urge to over-work can often lead to the trampling of the fresh and direct vision that is a huge part of the magic of painting-and the cycle of abuse that often reaches generations deep into families.
