Tissiack (or Tis-sa-ack) is the original Ahwahnechee Native American name for Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. The name translates to "Cleft Rock" or "Face of a Young Woman Stained with Tears". [1]
The legendary name stems from a local Yosemite myth. According to the story, a Mono Lake Paiute woman named Tis-sa-ack and her husband journeyed through the valley. In a tragic argument caused by severe drought and thirst, she fled crying. The Great Spirit punished them both by turning them into granite cliffs facing each other: Tis-sa-ack into Half Dome and her husband into the Washington Column. The dark vertical stripes on the rock face are said to be her tears. I think it's important to restore and preserve Native culture however and whenever possible. Place names are a good place to start.
