Windy Passage
Coast Ranges Pt. 1: Windy Passage
oil, varnish, burning on fsc certified sustainably harvested rock maple panel
29" x 18.5"
2020

I wanted this piece to evoke the feeling of long drives on lonely highways under vast skies, seeing ghosts of all the ancestors: hunters, farmers, missionaries, cowboys, steelworkers, dreamers all.  I wanted it to feel like hearing all their stories on the wind, in Spanish and Chumash and Surfer English, the chatter in the white noise of searching searching, searching for what, we do not know...

The loneliness and grandeur can be hallucinatory, like the heat in summer.

The tacos are often magnificent.

This piece was hand-built in my Los-Osos studio in 2019; the pictorial surface is 5/16" maple ply, and the sidewalls are made from 3/4" maple ply.  The total depth is roughly 1", and the piece comes with hanging hardware--eye-hooks and wire--pre-installed, and hangs simply from a single attachment point on the wall.  The sides of the picture are painted-out with spray paint and oil paint and are a carefully considered element of the composition.

The original can be purchase through Jordan Quintero Fine Art here.
