2010: the stop motion project

So, as it turns out, I'm pretty much a hippie. Well, at least I like to hang out with hippies, for various reasons. But my hippie friends like terrible art, and they wanted me to come and do "live painting" at their festivals, and so I started thinking about the idea of "live painting", various mystical Asian traditions (Taoism, Zen Buddhism) and the art-historical connection between the North American "counter-culture" and "High-Art" narrative of avant-garde Modernism (cubism cum abstract expressionism cum pop-art etc.) and I had a bunch of square panels left over from the All People's Temple Project, so I decided to have a go at performance painting, record it, explore the visual possibilities of the square/circle relationship, make a cool video, et voilá, the Stop Motion Project was born.
Then Obi Kaufmann invited my friends and I to do live drawing at his weekly event in Old Oakland at the now defunct Lavende Lounge. I kept doing the mandalesque little automatic thing, which began to merge with my Urban Organic thing, and I guess led to the Trying to be a Tree thing.
Woot.
