As I began to establish my own practice after college I started to work through series in various media. Drawing from various currents in modernist art history I was exploring ways to combine figurative, surrealist and abstract ideas into a contemporary aesthetic. I was highly influenced by early Twentieth Century European Modernist Abstraction, esp Picasso and his slide into the Neo-classic, Klee and Debuffet and their direct, honest, even brutal primitivism, the Surrealist idea of "automatic" drawing as a way to access the subconscious, and contemporary critical theory (Jimmy Durham et al) surrounding colonialism, the Gaze, and the critique of 20th century totalitarianisms.
